Telephone

By Clara Blair

Often
I look
At the telephone
As bringer (ringer)
Of bad news
(We lost Pop today)
Aggravation
(Come to my office right now, please)
Worry
(We haven't heard yet)
Anger
(That's not what you said yesterday)

But today
The telephone
Brought good news
(Hey, your husband asked me to call you.
We missed the train. Here he is.)
Relief
(Hi, Honey. I was stuck in a meeting)
Comfort
(I just called to hear your voice)
Joy
(I love you, too)
