God’s Fool (For Rev. Kit Howell, 1951-1996)

By Clara Blair

Stalking the corridors -- corridas -
Of will, of want, of won't,
Celebrating mysteries,
Cerebrating miseries,
Adam wanders, wonders
How others can be
As foolish as he.

Compassion intended, untended,
Sours and clouds,
Distilling, perhaps, in time, into
The heady wine of righteousness.
But Adam knows of wine:
Fooler of fools.

Adam, unseen but ever watching,
Treads on our consciences,
Keeps us honest.

Comment: Strong messages served with tight meaning transference between words that explore the magic of our language. Works like a one-two punch. Dramatic and strong delivery of a deep moral dilema churned by our mutual angst. One of my favorites.
