Poems In My Mind

By John I. Blair

A redbird at the morning end of time,
Feeding so early I can scarcely see it;
A trail of clouds across an April sky,
Drifting in the pregnant chill;
A kissing whisper from my drowsy wife
Before I leave for work;
A group of yawning boys
Standing at the corner for a bus;
Distant Dallas buildings lined
In blue dimensions over trees;
And the madly mangled
“10 MPH Speed Limit” sign
Lying in the middle of the road
As I pull up to park;
All these are poems in my mind,
Even if I never write them.
