Firemen

By John I. Blair

The 3 AM firemen
Are heros to the core.
At hours when all the world’s
Asleep and dreaming,
They stand brave, prepared to go,
Cheerful as they save the skins
Of people they don’t know.

Frantic calls in deepest night
Will bring them to the door,
Strong arms, strong backs,
No task too hard,
The very paradigms of giving;
And all they ever ask
Is that we keep on living.
