Lump In My Throat

By John I. Blair

A sore throat
That would not heal,
Consultations, probes.
Then, two months later,
This stitched line,
This lump.

I sit here numb,
Lost feeling in my fingers
Lips, forehead, nose,
Reeling still
After a week.
My shocked body
Trying once again to function
As it once so effortlessly did.

Life changes
The only certainty
Said the sages.

Look to each day,
Find the joy
In every moment,
Make it last for ages.

2008 John I. Blair
