One Bite of Winter

By John I. Blair

December’s first freeze
Forces me to realize
Life will not be always
Flower-sweet summer.

One bite of icy air
On my creaky thighs
Makes me treasure even more
The joys of sunny days.

But the long, long nights
Toward the solstice
Perfect my practice
At solacing my soul.
