Woodpecker

By John I. Blair

The woodpecker, epitome of hope,
Evidently sees his world the same
Turned right side up or upside down.

On the bottom or the top
Of the branches where he hunts
The picking’s just as good.

Perhaps if I could learn
To hop around and feed off wood
I’d cope as well as him.
