New Year

By John I. Blair

For those in tempered climes
It’s the magic time of year again
When night retreats.

After we are pained with fear
The sun might disappear entirely
And leave us cold and sightless

Once more we are redeemed;
Our light-requiring life
Will be sustained.

And even when this change
Is explained, explained, explained,
Still to us it seems a gift
Worth being thankful for.
