Jewels of Opar

By John I. Blair

When first I found
This misty flare
Of minute pink flowers
And red fruit
I thought to say
ďThis canít be realĒ,

This vegetative miracle
Springing up unbidden
In the gardenís wildest spot,
Half-hidden, protected,
Beside cracked bricks
From Mexico,
Rare beauty in the mud
Of my back yard.

But isnít that the way
With beauty?
More beautiful
If unexpected,
But always there.
