Thinking About The Days

By Bruce Clifford

I could stay this way forever
Thinking about the way we pretended this world to be
Thinking we were safe
Reminding us this is a different place
Thinking one could walk down the street
Away from this paranoia that touches everyone I meet

I'm looking for a book to remind me of days
Tell me a story about our great escape
Talk to me in verse only if you can avoid the lies
Thinking about the days we never imagined could arrive
Thinking about the days when we had to learn how to survive
Remind me of the days when we didn't have to compromise

It seems so long ago
Thinking about those nights looking out to the sea
Thinking we were safe
A voice that grounds me to this vacant space
Thinking these guns of war have gone away
Leaving us exhausted and feeling betrayed

Thinking about the days
Talk to me in verse only if you can avoid the lies
Thinking about the days we never imagined could arrive
Thinking about the days when we had to learn how to survive
Remind me of the days when we didn't have to compromise
