John I. Blair
I cannot tell where it’s coming from,
This slightly frightening cry in the night;
Standing alone on the lawn I hear it
Out in the blackness, beyond my sight.
To me the sharp and startling shriek
Announces “I am here in the dark,
And if you are a mouse, then hide,
And tremble lest you be my mark.
But even I feel a sudden chill
Down at the base of my lizard brain
As if this part remembers when . . .
And fears that time might come again.
