Early in The Morning

By John I. Blair

Early in the morning
When my feet meet the floor
Sometimes I shiver
Uncontrollably
As I stagger to the kitchen
To feed the waiting cats.

They meow piteously,
Rub against
My bare legs,
And purr pathetically,
Sucking up to me
For their breakfast.

I feel like
Meowing piteously too,
And rub myself all over
As my body
Keeps on shaking
From the shock of waking.

I don't know physiologically
What causes this reaction
But imagine it's my soul
Redlighting
That it's running on empty
And needs to be filled.
