Passwords

By John I. Blair

To muff a password
Once could cost a life,
So perilous the price
When passwords tested
Friend from foe.

Sitting at my keyboard
I surmise my life is safe;
But passwords yet suffice
To guard the gates
Behind which secrets hide.

Through antivirus firewalls
Scanned by unseen monitors
I venture now, penetrating
Electronic wards
Into a virtual castle keep;

And though a liege lord
Doesn’t dwell inside
And punish disobedience,
Yet disaster, doubt
And fear betide.
