Failure

By LinnieJane Burks

To Mother, in memory of Grandma Bullard.
Oh! How she did make me suffer!!

A longing deep and painful burned,
       The aching was intense!
And each week found this child around
       Squirming with suspense!

“She’ll be real tired,” she’d tell herself.
       “Today will be the time,
When I can break that stubborn streak,
And, Oh boy! Won’t I shine.”

But, pleading tones or screams of rage
Ne’er brought a ray of hope.
Grandma had doubt--I could cut out
A boiler full of fresh soap!
