As Much As Man Can Love A Tomcat

For years you’d put your paws
Upon my heart,
Pushing one and then the other
So hard it hurt a bit
And purring like,
Well, like a cat in heat.
We were lovers true.
I loved you
As much as man
Can love a tomcat;
And you loved me
For reasons only you knew.
So when this week
I gave your still body
Cradled in a favorite box,
Nested in a ragged towel
With one paw showing,
I cried manly tears.
