Vanishing Point

By John I. Blair

Rolling down the straight street
Between rusty houses
And random trees
I sense the sides, the curbs
Are sliding past
To a vanishing point
Just beyond my view.

Fading though my vision be
Imagination and memory
Lead me on beyond apparent
Street’s end to where
At last I might arrive
If once, just once, I
Could bring the sides together.

Would driving faster work?
Or driving longer, farther?
It’s never happened, never come.
But when it does, what then? What
Happens after vanishing? We
Wonder, all of us; and on that day
I will find out.
