In The Midnight Forest Of My Mind

By John I. Blair

In the midnight forest of my mind
I stumble through a gloomy wood,
Sniffing musty midnight smells,
Fumbling my way with fingers, feet,
Starting at the muffled sounds,
But seeing nothing, nothing.

How I arrived here I can guess.
The gateway loomed before my eyes
Like the eastward end of Eden
After angels stepped aside.
The river slid seductively
Near the path, near the path.

Now I am lost, abandoned
By religion, by philosophy;
Nothing kind, nothing good.
All is darkness.
I repeat:
All is darkness.
