Looking for Brilliance

By John I. Blair

Looking for brilliance
In my life
I see the sun

Shining on me
As it always has
When clouds have cleared.

But though the metaphor
Is comforting
(As is the warmth)

Something’s lacking –
Something I have sought
All my days.

I’m still hoping
For a mote of understanding
Floating in the light.

And it’s seldom there
Or never
Depending on my standards,

Depending on how hard
I may insist
That it be true,

Not just a hunch,
Not just a bit
Of undigested lunch.
