Christmas Traditions

By Judy Harris

'Twas the night before Christmas and all through the kitchen,
The tired food-maker was prayin' and wishin'.
The meal and presents were prepped for tomorrow's big day,
"But what about supper," her guilty conscience did say.
She threw open the freezer, and what should appear,
One chub of hamburger- way back in the rear!
Surely there's something in a pantry waning thin...
And stand-up shells sat where they had faithfully been.
A check of the fridge for fresh ingredients she searched...
Oh, yes! Tomatoes, lettuce, cheese were dutifully perched!
But, 'proper for a holy Eve?' she tearfully questioned...
Then dear ol' hubs offered his hungry suggestion:
Let's eat tacos and beans with chips on the side...
Create a holiday tradition we can follow with pride!
So, the gal of the home, with help from her man,
Scurried around making tacos in pans.
All the extras were cleaned, chopped, plated with care
Ready to add to this impromptu fare.
And the two happily crunched through their taco treat
Knowing tomorrow would bring folks to see and more foods to eat.
Tonight, this was perfect in every way,
As they anticipated a very blessed Christmas Day!
Later, the dishes were dried and put up in their places...
The little ol' couple had smiles on their tired faces!
Taco Eve just might be their new Christmas tradition
To go along with Kindness and Thankfulness-- always their mission.
So, be humble and happy, look after each other--
As we learned from a Babe, a Carpenter, and Mother.
We might not have much, and we might have some sorrows,
Just slow down, hug your loved ones...there will be better tomorrows.
Take care of yourself and those you hold dear.
Merry Christmas to y'all and Happy New Year!
