Keeping It Real

By M. Jay Mansfield

(9-27-02)

Now let’s keep it real....
slow it down and let the music grow...
Not looking for mass appeal....
not even gonna worry about how it flows....
Gonna lay down some words...
soft gentle like a lover's caress....
Yes, it’s true that I’ve made war....
But making love is when I am at my best......

Keeping it real......
Laying down to the Bill Black trumpet blast....
Loud and smooth....
the world listens to high distortion car crashes...
Give me jazz, give me the blues.....
no time tonight to be hating....
I see women that don’t know my moves....
yes, I’ll act shy, it’s like baiting.....
but here there ain’t no game warden....
Just players, hustlers, and lovers....

Keeping it real.....
I’m a lover.....
Games are for children to play....
am I here forever?
No, I might not be here come tuesday...
but I’m real....
Giving a hundred percent of me...
every touch....
Really burning of fire....
every glance....
Is the hunger from inside of me....

Keeping it real....
Yes, I work the night sometimes...
But I’m not a vampire....
I leave them with a gift everytime....
I give, not take.....
They get something like no one else offers...
They get real....
They get total attention....
Not a second faked....
Total adoration.....
Yes, I slide in and out of the alleys....
more like a moon beam than a shadow...
Touching each sweet face with a caress...
a Caress only a lover knows...

Keeping it real......
Keeping it real....
keeping it real....
I’m not a player so sometimes I sleep alone...
It gives me time with god....
a chance to rest my dome.......
The trumpets fade out..
and in comes the news....
reaching over changing the station....
it was too real it’s too blue......
soft Sarah Vaughn comes on and I lay back....
I remember the look ....
I remember you....
that smile.....
and yeah, it’s all worth it...
keeping it real....
