Perch In A Pool

By John I. Blair

A long time since
In a far place
I stood on the bank
Of a clear pool
To watch a perch swim.
I could see the perch;
The perch could see me.
The perch did not leave;
I had nowhere else to be.
We stared face to face and,
For half an hour,
That was my perch.
Presumably
I was its man.
