~~~snowflakes_rainbows_butterflies_puppies~~~
By M. Jay Mansfield
I chased the puppy thru the soft green glade……
past fluttering flutterbys….
A place never disturbed by man nor spade…..
Chasing the rainbows….
Praying days like this could be made…..
And I followed him. Rollicking into the rainbows light….
Further up on the hill side….
Much deeper into the coming night….
His barks got softer and softer….
Just off to the right…….
I followed my best friend to see where it would lead…
It wasn’t too long till the night surrounded….
And I prayed for a warm cup of mead…..
I wish my flight of fancy was grounded…..
It was way too dark to see……
I sparked my lighter gently…..
And watched the prism grow…..
Something so ever stately…..
The seasons first, fresh snow…..
I laughed a bit more loudly
I called to man's best friend…..
I waited to hear his answer….
Not a sound upon the land…..
No not a panting bay was heard …
So I turn back to my home land….
Crunching as I go….
A thousand steps to the left…
A thousand more in a row..
My breath so loud I grow deaf…
Just more and more silent snow….
A thousand more to the left….
Deeper and deeper I go…..
Deeper I can not catch me breath….
Covered by pristine snow….
The last crystal prisms settle upon my death…
Comment: Structurally rather ambitious, subject an interesting response to a presumed question "why don't you ever write a poem about something nice, like snowflakes, rainbows, butterflies and puppies?" Liked it.
