Put Down Your Pen

By Bruce Clifford

It's a sad day when someone tells you
"Put down your pen" "Your words are haunting me"
It's a sad day when people can't understand
They try to read between the lines
But they can't get inside my mind

It's a sad day when someone tells you
"Put down your pen" "Your words are dark and make me afraid"
It's a sad day when people try to analyze
Dissecting each lyric one at a time
There is nothing in there to find

All I can say is that this is a spiritual journey
Maybe the truth hurts
Maybe the truth hurts

All I can say is that I never wrote from the dark side
Maybe it's too deep
Maybe it's too beyond you

My words have never hurt anyone
Why do you take things so personally?
I've never asked you to read it
I've never asked you to like it
You don't have the right to hold the truth against me
You're not even understanding what you are trying to read
You never took the time to get to know me

It's a sad day when someone tells you
"Put down your pen" "Put down your pen"
It's a sad day when people take your words and twist them around
I don't write for you to read
I write for the best part inside of me
