Who Am I?

By John I. Blair

My lineage (all irrelevant):
English, German, Scots, Norwegian,
Norman, Saxon, Viking, Gael,
Northern European, Cro-magnon,
Seed from outer space?

My erstwhile-ruddy hair, my freckled skin,
Blue eyes, long skull, hawk nose,
Square chin? Mere surface.
Learned precepts, manners, dress,
The words I use? Coincidence of place.

But where I give my heart away,
What I’d die for, live for,
That and only that is who I am;
And that, my friend, I choose myself
And pray my choice finds grace.
