Crossword

By John I. Blair

Fill the little coded frame,
Hunt the pattern, mark the boxes,
Follow links to definitions,
Track a long-forgotten fact.

Puzzle over punning hints,
Make synapses reconnect
To shunt back murky memories
That I haven’t thought in years.

Doing crosswords every day
Will hold senility at bay,
Keep old minds sharper,
So they say.

But the effort they exact
Aggravates me near to tears,
And I’m persuaded this is how
Crossword puzzles earned their name.
