Rock Solid

By John I. Blair

I found a rusty sandstone block
Half hiding in my holly hedge,
An oracle of ancientness.

It resonates of inland seas,
Monsters gliding through the waves,
Dragons swooping from the skies,

Time so devoid of humankind
It abashes me to think
We have planned to rule the world

Like dinosaurs so long ago
Before an errant asteroid
Eradicated Yucatan.
