For Clara's Mother

By John I. Blair

When I help you up the stairs

I touch a past I never lived in

That I live with every day.

When I take your hand

I hold a filament

Extending back through time,

A link to pictures in old albums,

To the passions long since dust

That shape and guide my lover’s life.
