Egret Light

By John I. Blair

A white exclamation
On the dark shore
Of a roadside pond
Calls my attention
From the coming night
For a moment.

Something about the egret
Concentrates the waning light
And makes its feathers glow
Even though at sunset
Little else is visible
On the black bank.

Here is my reminder
Of more lasting reality
When I am burdened
Almost beyond capacity
With limited sight
And perilously spent.
