Just Like Him

By Bruce Clifford

He’s sitting on a bench screaming obscenities to the world
Sitting all alone
One has to wonder what he’s been through

Can I end up just like him
Where does his story begin

Did he know his mother
Did he have a happy life
A sister or a brother
A significant other or a wife

How did he end up here
Was he once an executive or has he always been here

He’s sitting on a bench with his clothes or ragged and torn
Apparently no where to go
He must have nowhere where he belongs

Can I end up just like him
Did he once have a job and a bed to sleep in
Can I end up just like him
Shouting in the streets with no one listening

He’s sitting on a bench shouting out to an endless sky
Sitting all alone
Ignored by the traffic and the casual passer by

He’s sitting on a bench screaming obscenities to the world
Sitting all alone
One has to wonder what he’s been through

Can I end up just like him
Does he have a family or a next of kin
Can we end up just like him
Lost on a bench as the day begins
