Almond Eyes

By John I. Blair

Granddaughter mine,
Infant child,
Gazing into my heart
With almond eyes,
Slightly veiled
By epicanthic folds
As if concealing mystery,
Challenging my mind
Regarding
Sad canards
I’d read
Or once was told.
You’re much
Too young
To talk or hold
A complex thought.
But,
Whatever lies
Behind those eyes
If I could look inside,
The logic of biology
Implies that part
Of what I’d find
Is me.
